Q&A

DAVID BAND TEXTILES AWARD | ALICE POTTS | NORWICH UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE NAMED AN AWARD WINNER?

It is an amazing feeling to have received an award from GFW, especially the David Band textiles award. you spend so much time developing your final collection, basically devoting your whole life to it that when you receive recognition for it theres nothing that can really describe that feeling.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING SINCE GFW?

Since finishing GFW, Honestly i took a much needed break (for 2 days) before getting into developing my work further. After finishing my degree and my final collection i feel I've only just begun developing my practice with interlocking so have been spending most of my summer experimenting with new geometric structures and fabrics.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE?

I've recently been accepted to start an MA this september, which I'm really excited about. In the bigger picture i would love to have developed my work to be strong enough but still feel it needs  more time to develop it and push it further. Doing the MA allows me to have the time and support of other students and tutors to really push the boundaries further so that maybe i could create my own brand.

HAS BEING INVOLVED WITH GFW LED TO ANYTHING ELSE?

Theres a lot that comes with GFW that i believe makes it important for graduates to experience. Its helped me make connections and allowed people who otherwise may have never seen my work to have seen my collection on the catwalk. Also, i feel it helped me become aware of how diverse and big the industry is and allows you to see other universities and students styles. GFW has lead me to photo shoots of my work and connection with start up companies and even to be part of GFW.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST HEAR ABOUT GFW?

The first time i heard about GFW was 5 years ago when i was studying me A levels. i remember we went along on a college trip to go see the work of the final year and it was an amazing experience that has still stuck with me. Obviously the degree is an important part of university but i think especially in my final year i would be lying if i didn't say that my aim was alway getting into the selection from our university for GFW.
