Meet GFF Talent, Renu Sigar, a final year student at Nottingham Trent University. Renu’s final major project is focused around reducing waste without sacrificing the art of the garments. “Even before my final inspiration came through, I knew that I wanted to significantly cut down on fabric scraps when I'm actually making my final garments.” says Renu. Read all about it below!

What is the most valuable thing you have learnt at university?

The most valuable thing I've learnt in university is how to articulate my story through my work. The tutors do an amazing job of making sure that what we're thinking in terms of ideas for our design translate into reality.

What was the starting point of inspiration for your final project?

The starting point for my final year project was to just reduce the amount of waste when creating my garments. Even before my final inspiration came through, I knew that I wanted to significantly cut down on fabric scraps when I'm actually making my final garments.

What form does the final project take?

My project will have pure geometric garments from zero waste techniques along with editorial shots of the outfits of the final pieces to showcase the wearable art designs. I'll also create a magazine feature minimal geometric inspirations across various design fields.

How have you evolved as a young creative while studying?

My designs have evolved a lot as I've sharpened my skills in all aspects of designing while studying at university. My focus in while creating garments also take sustainability as an important aspect as well as the consumers who will wear the final pieces

What are the messages and themes behind your project that you want people to take away? Do explore any topics like diversity, sustainability or politics in your work?

The main theme behind my project is of course to point out the waste that is so eminent in the fashion industry and how the pieces are supposed to be an artistic interpretation of minimalism through deconstructed garments

What’s an aspect of the fashion industry that you’re passionate about fixing or having a positive impact on?

The main focus of my project and that is to reduce the production waste, and fabric wastage is something that is not really focused on in the industry except for "cost cutting methods" when it should be thought as a preventative measure to reduce environmental impact.

What is your plan once you finish your BA?

I'm either going to do my Masters in fashion business to get a hang on the more finance and management side of the fashion industry to try and start my own brand in the future or study Creative Direction as I feel I am great at handling creative ideas and directing how things need to work and be the decided factor
