Welcome to the first GFF Talent post on Graduate Fashion Week, where we spotlight a talented student from one of our 38 member universities, ahead of Graduate Fashion Week 2019 in June.
This week, we meet Carmarthen School of Art student, Anna Lowe. Studying fashion design and construction, Anna’s graduate collection ”Cohesion” is inspired by female fighters and protectors, aiming to celebrate and empower women. In celebration of International Women’s Day, we caught up with Anna, who talked us through her inspirations and research, sharing her sketches and mood boards with us.
What led you to create a collection celebrating inspirational women?
Growing up, I’ve been surrounded by strong, creative and compassionate women — my Mum and Granny especially have constantly inspired me. I’ve always had a passion for design and illustration, but never really realised it until my Granny passed away during my A Levels; this brought on a time of reflection and questions such as: what do I really love to do? What am I truly passionate about? the answer was always Design. It felt only natural for my third year project to stem from this.

Other than family, who else have you researched for your collection?
My collection looks at inspirational women, past and present, it celebrates and empowers women. My project looks at women in the war, suffragettes, female pilots, includes family references and modern women, whilst examining the links between them. I continuously mix the links within my design work, which has created an exciting colour palette and an array of tailored jackets and casual wear.
Where did you go to find inspiration and conduct your research?
The process began during the summer upon museum and exhibition visits. My trips to the Imperial War Museum and Museum of London’s suffragette exhibition really helped push my concept through from the start.
I also spent time with my mum over the summer photographing what she loves to wear and looking at photographs of my Granny and her favourite accessories/clothing; this was a really special time. During a time where difference of opinion and a divide in society is ever present, I feel it’s important for fashion to bring a positive message, and bring people together; hence my collection “Cohesion”…together as one.
