It’s been a fantastic week one of our residency with TikTok, a partnership with GFF that gives final year students the opportunity to showcase their talent as they embark on their careers in fashion.

As the official merchandise partner of TikTok, students from our member universities have spent the week designing and creating merchandise inspired by their final collections. They have learnt about design for manufacturing, grading and realising designs into commercial patterns, production lines, quality control, as well as being mentored by some of today’s leading designers, GFF patrons and TikTok Creators.

By the end of the residency, which will continue with a new group of graduates next week, each emerging designer will have produced four garments of their chosen winning design which will be produced for TikTok to gift to their Creator and VIP community.

Lucy Moore, a fashion design graduate from Leeds Arts University, created a ribbon drawstring joggers this week. “It’s been a really good week, I think we’ve all learnt so many things, from how to use different machines to simple tips and tricks that the seamstresses have learnt on the job for many years that you don’t pick up at uni,” she said. “I want my own business eventually so this has given me an indication about how much work goes into each garment.”

Roisin Harkin, a Birmingham City University graduate, was inspired by the way TikTok users take trends and make them their own. “For my TikTok collection, I wanted to have an interactive element in the same way that the app is interactive,” she said. “I have zips in the armholes so that they’re detachable and you can play around with the style of it.”

Cassandra Russell, from brand partnerships in Fashion & Retail at TikTok has seen the collections transform from images into finished products throughout the 5-day residency. “I’m blown away by how well they have been executed, having seen the mood boards and the reality it’s unbelievable, they should be so proud of themselves,” she said. “We’re sending these out to a combination of influencers and our most VIP clients, so it’ll be the head of marketing for Burberry getting one of these items, and lots of other fashion houses as well.”

“Taking on the TikTok ethos, because it is such a creative, fun, joyful platform, that has really shone through in all of the items. These graduates have such an original take on a staple garment like a t-shirt and I love it.” Cassandra Russell
